Like many of you, I have been glued to the news lately, watching and worrying as the COVID-19 toll mounts in this country and around the world. The evolving situation has helped us begin to understand the severity of the disease and the risks that our health care system will be overwhelmed. In some places, it very nearly has been. This is difficult to watch, but it provides context for the changes we are all being asked to make.
Many of you are largely or fully sheltering in place. You might be newly working from home and homeschooling children on top of everything else. You might be managing difficult finances at your company or institution. You might be worried about your own finances in addition to your health and the health of loved ones. Perhaps many of your plans for your future now live in a shadow of great doubt.
And I know some of you – my medical and nursing colleagues in ICUs, ERs and other places on the front lines of this war – are fighting the battle of your lives. You are brilliant and compassionate, and we all owe you the deepest debt of gratitude.
Whatever your situation, my heart goes out to each of you.
With all this in mind, I have compiled a set of resources that I think you will find useful. Finding accurate information takes skill in the best of times, but the world is changing quickly right now, and misinformation is rampant.
In this resource, you will find sources for the latest public health data related to the pandemic and inspiration for how we should be managing the pandemic and thinking about the future moving forward. You’ll find tools for self-care – important for all of us right now, but especially for the health care providers doing the hardest of jobs at this time. And you will find a set of links that will take you nearly as far as you can get from this experience, because we all need an escape from time to time.
If you are feeling unsettled, know that you are not alone. Although we might be physically distant from one another right now, it is my hope that this shared challenge will enable us we will come together in other ways and find a new and better way forward for us as a society. Let’s navigate this together.
